South Florida at Army Odds and Lines

What the spread says

The college football lines have this one in New York as a tight game. Army will be giving South Florida 31/2 points.

So, what do we learn from this? Well, Army played an outmatched opponent in its first game, rushing for more than 500 yards in a demolition of Bryant. Meanwhile, South Florida’s offense struggled, but its defense was staunch in a win over FIU.

Now, that reality sets in for both schools. The college football Week 2 odds have the total set at 49 points. Given the problems FIU had scoring against South Florida and the trouble the Bulls’ offense had, this number feels way high.

Army can run over the best teams in the country. That also means drives that will devour time as in limiting the number of possessions each team will have. The defenses can enforce their will here while the offense may have moderate success.

What the Team Totals Reveal

The total gives one the impression that points will be scored. Based on the defenses’ play in the openers, that would be a big leap. Look out for a tougher game than expected and for 49 points to be a challenge.

The team totals are where you find angles the spread can’t express: a bettor who thinks one offence is overrated but has no view on the result can bet that side’s under directly.

Reading the Total

The College Football spreads suggests a 27-23 game or around that.  Hard to believe with the way Army eats clock there will be enough drives for that to happen.

Halves and Quarters

The game should be tight throughout. The only possibility for a blowout is Army running all over South Florida. Before believing that, recognize that in 25 rushes, the Bulls allowed all 80 rushing yards.

Pick: Under 49 points.
