What the spread says
The script gets flipped every week in the SEC. Texas, Georgia, and Alabama lost in Week 7. Meanwhile, perennial also-ran Kentucky is 6-1 overall and surging. It gets slumping Vanderbilt at home on Saturday at a 10½-point favorite in college football odds.
The number just misses a key one by a hook. That said, there is a reason the Commodores are double-digit underdogs. They no longer have 2025 Heisman contender Diego Pavia and are 3-4 overall, 0-4 in the conference.
The total is 51½ in college football Week 8 odds. That suggests a lot of points in this one, particularly from the Wildcats.
What the Team Totals Reveal
College football lines have Kentucky as a strong favorite here.
The two team totals should roughly sum to the game total, and their difference should roughly equal the spread. The Wildcats have won five in a row, including impressive road wins against Texas A&M, South Carolina, and Oklahoma.
The total makes sense when one considers how poor Vanderbilt has played this year. In losing four in a row, Vandy has allowed 142 points. That explains why a 10½-point favorite and 51½-point total have been set. Vandy is good for between 17-21 points even in losses, so it is entirely possible this one turns into a horse race.
Reading the Total
Expect offenses to be off and running with the opening kickoff. Plenty of scoring early and throughout the game. Remember, Kentucky usually is on the short side of routs.
Now that the Wildcats are playing stellar football, don’t be surprised if they keep scoring throughout the game, even late in the fourth quarter. Teams that have a history of being beaten badly often take the chance to pile on points when the situation turns.
Halves and Quarters
Expect Nebraska to score early and often. The Cornhuskers could blow this one open by halftime. If that happens, the fourth quarter could see Nebraska trying to run the clock as opposed to piling it on the Terps. If one is looking for when points to be scored, expect the first and second quarters to see a slew of them.
Pick
The Wildcats get to show the Commodores they are for real by pummeling them. Who expected Kentucky to be 7-1, which it would be with a win here? Surprise, surprise, every week in the SEC.
Pick: Kentucky -10½ points; Over 51½.
