You can convert any price into an implied probability: for a minus number, divide it by itself plus 100 (-150 becomes 150 ÷ 250, or 60%); for a plus number, divide 100 by the number plus 100 (+200 becomes 100 ÷ 300, or 33%). Moneylines aren’t always posted on every game, particularly when a line sits at or near a pick’em, in which case the spread is the only way to back a side.
- NFL Totals (over/under): The total is a line set for the combined points both teams are expected to score, and you wager on whether the final figure lands above or below it, regardless of who wins. If the total is 45½, a 24-21 finish combines for 45 points and lands under; a 24-24 finish combines for 48 and lands over. Check the number rather than the winner, which is the habit that trips up newer bettors. As with spreads, half points guarantee a result while whole numbers can push — a total of exactly 45 refunds both sides if the teams combine for 45. Totals also come with implied team totals, which split the number between the two sides and let you bet on one team’s scoring without taking a view on the outcome.
- NFL Live Betting: Live betting means wagering on a game already in progress, with prices redrawn continuously as the situation changes. A team that opened as a 3-point favourite might be laying 10 after scoring twice in the first quarter, or getting points if they fall behind early. The same applies to totals: a scoreless first quarter pulls the number down, a shootout pushes it up. What you’re pricing is no longer the matchup but the matchup plus everything that has happened so far. Two features distinguish it from pre-game betting. Lines are recalculated in seconds rather than days, so the number in front of you reflects the score, the time remaining, field position, and possession. And markets are suspended briefly during significant moments — a scoring play, a turnover, a review — while prices are reset, which means a bet you’re midway through placing may not be accepted at the price you saw. The practical use is expressing a view that the pre-game line no longer allows. If you thought a game would be low-scoring and both teams have traded touchdowns, the pre-game under is gone, but the live total has moved to a number that may still suit you. If you liked an underdog and they’ve fallen behind by two scores, you can back them at a longer price than was available at kickoff. It also lets you act on things nobody could price in advance: an injury to a starting quarterback, weather turning, or a team that plainly cannot run the ball. The trade-off is speed. Live prices carry a wider margin than pre-game lines, and they move fast enough that reacting to what you’ve just watched is usually reacting late — the market has already adjusted.
